John 15:9–17
Last Sunday at Medina Community Church, we continued our Fruitful spiritual campaign by looking deeper into what Jesus meant when He said:
“Abide in My love.” — John 15:9
Last week, we focused on the source of fruitfulness:
Jesus is the Vine. We are the branches.
This week, we explored what it actually looks like to remain connected to Him.
One of the most powerful truths in this passage is that Jesus loves us with the same love the Father has for the Son. That’s hard to even comprehend. Many people spend their lives trying to earn God’s love, but Jesus invites us to simply receive it and remain in it.
Abiding is not about striving harder.
It’s about staying connected.
Three Truths from John 15
- Abiding Is Rooted in Love
Jesus said:
“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.” (John 15:9)
Obedience does not earn God’s love. Instead, obedience flows out of a relationship with Him. Just like a healthy marriage is built on love and closeness, our walk with Christ was never meant to be cold legalism or religious performance.
When we truly understand His love, obedience becomes a response rather than a burden.
- Abiding Produces Joy
Jesus also said:
“These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full.” (John 15:11)
The world offers temporary happiness based on circumstances. Jesus offers something deeper: joy that remains.
Real joy is not found in striving harder.
It’s found in abiding deeper.
- Abiding Changes How We Love Others
Jesus commanded His followers to:
“Love one another as I have loved you.” (John 15:9)
A life connected to Jesus begins to reflect the love of Jesus. The more we receive His love, the more we are able to extend grace, patience, kindness, and forgiveness to others.
We cannot stay deeply connected to Christ while remaining disconnected from people.
Final Thought
One of the reflection questions from Sunday was this:
Are you living in His love, or are you trying to earn it?
That question gets to the heart of John 15.
Jesus never called us to live exhausted spiritual lives trying to prove ourselves worthy. He called us to abide — to remain close, connected, and dependent on Him.
The more we live in His love, the more we reflect His love.
