WHAT TO DO WHEN GOD HAS ALREADY SPOKEN
Have you ever wished God would just give you a sign?

Lord, should I do this? Should I go there? Should I take this step? Just make it clear.

There is nothing wrong with asking God for wisdom. Scripture actually tells us to ask. But there is a difference between asking God for guidance and demanding more proof before we will trust Him.

That’s the problem Jesus confronted in Luke 11.

The people had seen Jesus do extraordinary things. The blind received their sight. The lame walked. Demons were cast out. Just moments earlier, Jesus had delivered a man who had been unable to speak.

And still they wanted another sign.

Jesus responded:

“This is an evil generation. It seeks a sign…” — Luke 11:29

Their problem wasn’t a lack of evidence.

Their problem was what they were doing with the light God had already given them.

And sometimes we do the same thing.  We keep asking God to show us what to do when, in reality, He’s already made it clear.

Should I forgive?
He’s already spoken.

Should I love that difficult person?
He’s already spoken.

Should I share my faith?
He’s already spoken.

Should I obey what His Word clearly commands?
He’s already spoken.

Sometimes we ask God for more direction when what we really need is more obedience.

But Jesus doesn’t simply tell the crowd to stop looking for signs. He points them to the greatest sign of all. He calls it “the sign of Jonah.”  Just as Jonah was three days in the great fish, Jesus would die, be buried, and rise again.

The resurrection changes everything.

Jesus was essentially saying, You want the ultimate evidence that I am who I say I am? Watch what happens after they put Me in the grave.

And He walked out.

The resurrection is God’s ultimate declaration that Jesus Christ is who He claimed to be.

What more does God have to do? The cross. The empty tomb. The risen Savior. God has spoken.

Then Jesus changes the picture from a sign to light.

He says:

“No one, when he has lit a lamp, puts it in a secret place or under a basket, but on a lampstand…” — Luke 11:33

God isn’t hiding the light.

The problem isn’t that God hasn’t given us light. The question is whether we’re willing to receive the light He’s already given.

And that’s where this gets very personal.  Sometimes we want God to show us the entire road before we’re willing to take the next step.

How is this going to turn out?
What happens six months from now?
What if I step out in faith and things don’t work the way I expect?

We want a roadmap.
God says, “Follow Me.”

We want certainty.
God says, “Trust Me.”

We want to know how everything is going to work out.
God says, “I will be with you.”

God hasn’t promised to show us the whole road.
He’s promised us something far better—Himself.

Maybe that’s the word you need today.  You don’t have to see ten steps ahead to take the step God has put in front of you. You don’t have to have every question answered before you trust Him.

You don’t have to know the plan. You just need to know the Person.

So maybe the question isn’t:
“God, will You give me another sign?”

Maybe the better question is:
“What will I do with what God has already spoken?”

Stop asking for another sign.
Believe the greatest sign.
And walk in the light you’ve already been given.

Because Jesus Christ is alive.

God has spoken.
