The disciples watched Jesus preach, heal the sick, cast out demons, and perform incredible miracles. Yet the only recorded time they asked Him to teach them something was when they said,
“Lord, teach us to pray.” (Luke 11:1)
Why? Because they realized that everything Jesus did flowed out of His relationship with the Father.
In His answer, Jesus teaches us three simple but life-changing truths about prayer.
1. Prayer Begins with a Relationship
Jesus didn’t begin with a method or a formula. He began with two words:
“Our Father.”
Prayer is not about saying the right words. It’s about talking with our heavenly Father, who loves us and invites us into His presence.
2. Prayer Puts God’s Priorities First
Before Jesus teaches us to pray about our needs, He teaches us to pray:
“Hallowed be Your name. Your kingdom come.”
Prayer isn’t primarily about getting God to accomplish my plans. It’s about bringing my heart into alignment with His plans. Sometimes God changes our circumstances. Often, He changes us.
3. Prayer Expresses Daily Dependence
Jesus tells us to pray,
“Give us day by day our daily bread.”
God gives us today’s grace for today’s needs. We often want next year’s bread, but God invites us to trust Him one day at a time. Tomorrow’s grace will be there when tomorrow comes.
Final Thought
Prayer isn’t a religious duty. It’s the daily conversation of God’s children with their Father.
May our prayer be the same as the disciples’:
“Lord, teach us to pray.”
